It's interesting to see exactly where the runners are in relation to the water table. They appear to be going up and down from the bottom to the middle of the table. That's where we need to put the fly Good point. I believe that fishing too shallow is the most common mistake made, even at summer level. Henrik Mortensen demonstrated how to fish a pool catering for fish at all depths in his DVD Cracking The Code. I try to alway bear this in mind when I know there are fish in a pool.

That has been my aim this year - to fish slightly deeper than normal. A hover of slow inty is fine in all but the shallowest/slowest of runs.
Our recent sorty to the Tay was using the Hover SH and we both connect with a fish for the short time we were actually fishing with Sean getting a decent sized Seatrout as well. So IMHO, there is no need to stick to the rule book on floating lines at this time of the year. Experiment and see for yourselves if it works better or not?

About 10 years ago I fished in the company of some scandics abroad in low water. (we fished different rivers and met on the plane) They fished only sinkers even in low water and their catch rate was generally acknowledged by the guides as being better than everyone else. Ever since then I try and fish as deep as is practical no matter what the water level. I never fish a full floater now, except for skating a sunray or fishing a bomber.

Haven't fished floating line only for years now always got a 7 - 10ft tip of sink line on. However last year I fished a little deeper with a longer tip and weighted fly guess what it worked. I'm ready to fish deeper now and think it will be more productive.
I was surprised once when I watched a sink tip line with a waddington from a bridge, just how close to the surface the waddy actually was.
