I have been doing twice monthly grayling days on a carrier section of theKennet, for some 8 or so years. Being a good host/guide/cook at lunch time i tend not to fish hard, but over the years have found small and pink and not to much lead works. In my breifing for a day I tell the rods 14s are big flys and much smaller is often better. Some rods have only the big fashionable chezk(sp) nymphs which in the fairly smooth chalk stream here ,are way to fast sinking and noisy as they plop inot the water. My go to pattern is as follows hook-Sprite international #16/18 lead-5-6 turns simian square lead fine rib utc pink fine 4/5 turns Silk as violent a pink as I can find, red at a push. body -a light pink white/or as violent a pink as possible.in dubbing from Dave Downie.
Recent trips have seen low water and a #20 with just the UTC wire as ballast have been most effective. Try the simple recipe above ,bigger for faster water smaller for the almost still shallows !
