The Farr Side w/e 28th April 2013
The Farr Side is a weekly report from Ian Farr Head Ghillie at Bemersyde for over Quarter of a Century
Monday
Great looking water today, 2 ft 6 and falling, 4 rods braved the gale force winds today, god it was hard work with the fly but give the boys there due they tried hard. Fish came today on the spin rod out of Jock Shure. George Elliott the lucky man. Seen one fish in the Cromwiel and another down Woodside.....lets hope they keep coming now. Tuesday Water 1 ft 6 today and it looked fab, nice and clean. We see a few fish running today but nothing on the end of the line. This wind has never stopped blowing for what seems like a lifetime, almost made it impossible to fish the fly today. Wednesday Looking good again today some rain over night and river rising above us. 4 rods fish, more wind to contend with but we are seeing some fish running in most of the pools. We even managed to catch one out of the Dish, 12lbs caught on a black and yellow tube. Roger Wheater the lucky man today. Thursday Water still up a little in the morning 1 ft 9. Water Temp 49.6 seen some fish down Woodside but not able to catch them, I think the rise in water put them of the take. Seems like the first non windy day for months and the sun came out today hooray hooray. We see a pair of Peregrine Falcons today in the Cromwiel a special sight. Friday Some day today, started with sun then rain then hail and thunder but no wind. A fish in the Cromwiel, Patience Anderson had a nice fish on the fly, 10 lbs and as fresh as paint. Only took her 10 casts!! Water was looking good today 1 ft 6 and clear fish showing in Woodside today. We had a hatch of March Browns today and some nice Trout on the rise. Saturday Quiet day today 1f 2 and clear, fish about but not wanting to be caught it's still cold for time of year. Other Congratulations on those catching fish in a strange week weather wise, great to see some fish around!!!!

Disappointing day we thought there would be more fish to catch, water looks good about 9 inches.
Friday
Only one rod came today no one else could make it. Ian Pollitt with a fish out the Stream was our reward, nice fresh fish about 7lbs photo attached.
Saturday
Looked at the water at 7:30am it was 1 ft 9 and clear but by 9:00am it was up to 2 ft 6 and with colour. 3 rods fishing only one pull on the fly down Woodside, Robin Valentine had a brief encounter with a fish as he was striping in after a bad cast, some choice words where uttered.

The Farr Side w/e 19th May 2013 The Farr Side is a weekly report from Bemersyde Ghillie of over quarter of a century. Monday 3 rods today all fishing the fly in the morning into a hard wind, water came up in afternoon 5 inches due to heavy showers further up the river and a few downpours hear, cold today even though we had clear skies 1 fish in afternoon out the Boatpool to the dark art of spinning but when fish are few and far between desperate measures are needed. Fish fell to a Toby, Neil Campbells fish had spots of disease on its head not good!! Tuesday Water up today, 2 foot on the gauge but clear, another cold and windy day even with the sun out. Water dropped 2 inches by 5 pm and a fish for Bob Anderson out Woodside, 10 lbs nice and fresh, seen some fish on the move today lets hope some stop for us to catch. Wednesday Another cold windy day at Bemersyde will it never end this year some fish showing today but nothing to report. Thursday Water down to 1 foot today and clear but still cold on the legs in the Dish. The sun was out today and no wind hooooooooooray only one fish seen today in the Boatpool, have they moved on or are keeping there heads down today. Some trout rising today some hatch of flies on the water today. Friday Only one rod today and fish showing in the Boatpool. 6 fish seen all fresh with some in the stream, not wanting to be caught though. Saturday More wind and rain today brrrrrrrr winters back, river up 2 inches by lunch, no fish showing today, think they no its going to flood tomorrow. It should be a good height on Monday depends if any fish come forward on this flood or if they are all diseased and feeling sick most fish in pools have a spot on them.

The Farr Side
w/e 26th May 2013
Monday Start of another week and a 3 foot flood yesterday, a perfect water today 2 foot and clear, no one told the fish though i never seen a fish all day. Warm day but a bit muggy, heavy thunder showers tonight as I write, just home in time from my bike ride think we might have a brown water tomorrow. Tuesday Brown brown flood today 2ft 6 at 8:30 am Wednesday Great looking water, 2 foot and clear, 3 rods today, fish showing in Woodside and the Boatpool today. Lost one on the spin rod down Woodside and had a good pull on the fly in the Boatpool, I was giving David Proudfoot a Spey casting lesson in the Craddle, fish came for fly and typical Trout Fisherman struck it, never mind its a steep learning curve for him. Nice warm day today lunch outside makes a change. Thursday Back to winter today windy cold and horrible, 1foot and clear, full house and not even a pull today, more cold weather forcast tomorrow. Friday Same as Thursday but with more wind. Saturday Frost over night and water dropped hard down to 8 inches. Beautiful day, sun out and warm on the skin the odd fish showing but the down side more diseased fish showing up in the pools it's nearly June, never seen it this late not many spring fish this year. Other Was great to catch up with Shirley again the Mint Aero Biscuits and Choc Chip Cookies where fantastic, great company. Gutted for Ian that my Trout Fishing instincts kicked in and I lifted into my fish, I will know the next time.

The Farr Side
Midweek Special
Monday
Water height 5inches today, it’s getting low now. Sunny day, lost a fish in the Boat Pool on and off in an instant, bugger!! Starting to cut the river paths now its June. Chris Bryce and his cousin Martyn came for a evening cast and managed a fish out Woodside, 10 lbs safely returned. He managed to drop his phone in the river answering it, remember girlfriends and wives men can't fish and talk at same time ha ha ha.
Tuesday
What a day sun sun and more sun and just when you think its to sunny to catch fish bugger me we get 1 out Sangster's on the Sunray Shadow 8lbs, Richard Smith the happy man Frank Wood had a hold of another in the Stream but our trout fisherman Stewart could not touch a thing and they were rising all around him. He thinks Salmon fishing is hard ha ha ha.
Wednesday
3 rods turn up but only 2 fish, Shirley Bell and Ian Ross fished today. Charlie Jeffery just came for the BBQ and looking at photos he could not get it in fast enough, no fish today but it was very hot. Mrs Bell managed to hook me in rear end today in the dish her only bad cast of the morning.
3 days of for the ghillie now of to the Tay with Jim Reid and Charlie Jeffrey. Jim picks up the Malloch Trophy at the House Bruar for the biggest returned fish on the fly in Scotland a special moment for him.
