I would be happy fishing the GWG all spring. Do you mix the bucktail or yellow/orange and black over?

alan the coloured jc is a nice addition. Cheers Ross, some patterns look good with the dyed stuff and I think this one looks fishy.

Nice flies all round. I can never quite make up my mind re jungle cock on GBWGs. Am I right in thinking that the original pattern is without JC? I tie them both ways; jungle cock is always going to be attractive to the tier/fisher, but sometimes I wonder if it spoils the subtlety of the fly?
The coloured jungle cock really adds to MK's fly IMO,
Cheers F

macd and madkeen
Both are beautifully tied Tubes
However, as you know, every tyer has their own preferences and prejudices which helps them have confidence in what they have on the end of their leader.
I notice you both use a bit of Black tubing for the Hook.
On GBWG's Helmie tends to use Orange Tubing and I most often would choose Clear tubing
Do you feel strongly about the colour of tubing (it gives you the "edge" or do you think it doesn't really make much difference as far as the fish are concerned?
Would love to hear your thoughts on this arcane matter

Im not sure if subtly and an inch and a half tube are happy bedfellows, but I take your point.
The original black floss/gold rib body dont have JC and dont seem the worse for it- an understatement as it has accounted for 000's of salmon.
If nothing else the addition of JC to the gold version provides a contrast to the original as an altogether flashier proposition.
TB
I just prefer black or clear tubing for my tube flies, yet changing the colour of the tubing will certainly change the overall impression the fly makes. As ever confidence in the fly is the most important thing.
Does it matter to the fish? I have no idea.

Very interesting take off on the WG. Like many Atlantic Salmon patterns this one is quite effective for Winter Steelhead and I've even had some success using them for Pacific King Salmon. I infrequently use a hook larger than a #4, the usual exception is where I'm doing a bead body of some sort (a round bend barbless Gammi's), but if the Kings around ... out comes a package of 2/0's, usually done on a Willie Gun. Have also 'jazzed' a couple up with a bead or two on the body, but haven't had a chance to try them out as of yet.
But soon, very very soon as the spring Kings are now moving up into the upper Rogue River where I do 95% of my river fishing.

I was interested to read about the Willie Gunn variant in last month's T & S. It had feelers tied in just above the tubing and they were the usual stripped hackle stems. The flies did look good but IMVVHO boar bristle is more durable. Anyway I have tied up a few Feeler WG's for the party with whom I am fishing at Drum on the Dee next week, so we'll see if they are any good. Bit of a pig to tie on HMH devices since the boar bristle tends to splay at unfortunate angles being hard up against the tube-fixing mechanism; some occasional sweary words (silent ones so as not to offend the dog) but persistence pays in the end. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!!!
